The Center welcomes proposals to help fund innovative events, seminars, projects, and course and curriculum developments and innovation. Proposals involving interdisciplinary or collaborative projects and proposals bearing on the undergraduate experience are encouraged. Individuals and groups associated with the UM are eligible to apply. Collaborations with individuals, groups, or agencies outside the UM will be approved provided a University affiliate is a co-sponsor and submits the application.
Eligibility:
Proposals will be accepted from members of the UM community including:
- Students and recognized student groups Ad hoc collaborative efforts are encouraged; therefore, students who are not part of a recognized student group may consult with the Office of Student Activities and Leadership (SAL) for assistance (763-5900 or salead@umich.edu)
- Faculty
- Staff
- Departments, residence halls, or other administrative units within the University
Joint proposals involving more than one UM unit are encouraged, as are proposals involving collaboration with external organizations, as appropriate.
Types of Awards:
Support is available for innovative projects that promote teaching and public discourse on ethics in public life. A list of awards from previous funding cycles is available on this website. The Grant Goals Statement also provides an overview of the goals and priorities of the Center. Examples of projects and activities that will be considered include but are not limited to:
- Academic symposia, conferences and events focusing on themes of ethics in public life.
- Course enhancements or curriculum developments designed to expand or foster discourse on an understanding of ethical issues.
- A seminar, a seminar series, workshop series, or similar ongoing events designed to facilitate faculty or student discussions of ethical issues and/or consideration of ethical pedagogy.

Grants will generally be in the range of $500 to $7,000. Note: Most awards will likely be made in the mid to lower portion of this range. Applicants with unusual budgetary needs are encouraged to discuss their application with John Chamberlin, Director of the Center, prior to submitting it.
Home Unit Signature:
You are encouraged to notify your director, department chair, unit head, or dean of your proposal. The signature in section number eight is not mandatory, but is encouraged.
Considerations:
Preference will be given to new and innovative activities. Special consideration will be given to:
- Proposals that engage the undergraduate experience
- Proposals that focus on ethics in the professions
- Events open to the entire UM Community
The range of proposals from individuals, units, schools, colleges, organizations, etc., will be taken into account, and funding decisions will be based in part on the desire to develop a broad scope for activities in support of the Center’s mission.
